Final weekend of concerts at Governor's Inn

Wrapping up three months of exceptional live music every weekend at The Governor's Inn and Café, the season finale brings four evenings of concerts ending on Sept. 11.

On Thursday, Sept. 8, Matt Gelinas and his band Hopeless Folk play their 'happy hour' music from 6 to 9 p.m. from the Inn's Spaulding Steak & Ale Stage. On Friday night, from 7 to 10 p.m., Rochester's own George Donatello plays traditional acoustic music and takes requests from the crowd, whether he plays from the front lawn or under the big top tent. On Saturday night, from 7 to 10 p.m., local favorites 'Brothers in Arms' will play from the Café soundstage. Drawing on an extensive set list, including a mix of covers and original songs, Brothers in Arms members include Lou Goodwin (bass & vocals), Lewis Goodwin (rhythm guitar, saxophone and vocals), Eric Gilman (lead guitar), Andrew MacDonald (drums), and Michael Seavey (bass, trumpet and vocals). Their covers includes songs by Styx, the Rolling Stones, Lynyrd Skynyrd, The Who, and Aerosmith.

The final season concert on Sept. 11 — from the Café garden, 4 to 7 p.m. — will stage the full band of acclaimed roots dynamo Dan Walker. Fans of Martin Sexton might remember this acoustic dynamo that opened for Sexton at the Rochester Opera House. Walker has opened for other big names like Livingston Taylor and Jeffrey Gaines. Fans of familiar artists Jack Johnson and Dave Matthews will find musical kinship with Walker, who has also been described to be "one badass mo-fo on the guitar!" A furious picker and relentless strummer with a knack of turning the body of his acoustic guitar into a glorified hand-drum, Walker is the real deal. The music he puts out is fun, impressive, sharp, poignant, and often 'foot-stompin' and head-shakin'"

Walker's band includes Luke Crawley (electric and upright bass), Roy Wallace (drums and percussion), and Charlie Strater (lead guitar and harmonica) — players all highly skilled in the art of keeping it tight and straight forward, but who also aren't afraid to cut loose on their own and delve into a little jamming from time to time.

Old-time country, funk and more this weekend in Rochester

They'll play the classic, old-time golden era country music that you never hear on the radio anymore¿ Hank Williams, Merl Haggard, Johnny Cash, Tammy Wynette, Dollie Parton, and George Jones. This Sunday, Aug. 27 at The Café at The Governor's Inn from 4 to 7 p.m.

Harvey Reid and Joyce Anderson — two of the most beloved and talented musicians who are each known in their own right across New England — play the roles of Han and his country 'gal' Dixie. As part of a five piece country band called Hank and Dixie and the Knotty Pine Boys, Harvey and Joyce take on the eclectic musical personas of 'Hank and Dixie Baxter' as they hoot it up with his lonesome guitar and her foot-stompin' fiddle, along with the their Knotty-ness of the Pine Boys.

The Boys include the soulfoul pedal-steel of Nick Mickneer, with Rob Neeland (of the band 'High Range') on percussion and Kent Allen on bass. All together they bring out the best classic, down home, lonesome, foot-stompin' honky-tonk from the heart of Texas!

The Inn and it's Café stage four acts every weekend through mid-September (except Labor Day weekend). On Thursday evenings, Matt Gelinas and his band Hopeless Folk stage their weekly big beat favorites gig in front of The Spaulding Steak and Ale Restaurant from 6-9 p.m.

On Friday, Aug. 26, Ken Veno performs his happy hour style of music from 7-10 p.m., also on the front lawn. On Saturday night, Aug, 27, The George Brown Band will play from the soundstage of the Inn's Café from 7-10 p.m. An original jam band playing Americana, roots, and American funk, The G.B. band has been reviewed as having "a cool vocal delivery, great feel, and really solid lyrics." ROCHESTER — The Governor's Inn was filled Friday night as the annual Chamber Raffle Bash kicked off in a lively summer fashion with palm trees and rainbow leis.

While people milled around, chatting with friends and enjoying the Caribbean-inspired dinner, Peggy Johnson was entertaining the crowd with songs like "Mambo Italiano." She also sang a variety of 1960s country singer Patsy Cline's songs.

After grabbing a plate of food herself, she was surprised to hear her own named called during the secondary raffle prizes. Going home with a teeth whitening package, she said she was holding onto her second raffle ticket in hopes she could snag the grand prize of either a motorcycle or $10,000 cash.

"It's a great crowd," she said, adding she was glad she purchased her tickets months ago since the Chamber sold out of this year's event.

Event organizers said only 500 tickets were sold this year, and many people purchased more than one. This is the first time the Rochester Chamber of Commerce has sold out of the raffle event. It is also the first time the Chamber has included a dinner with the raffle. To give people more chances to win, the chamber opted for a "reverse raffle" to allow people who won't be winning the grand prize a chance to win smaller prizes.

Strafford resident Trish Turner was the first to win a secondary prize, taking home a golf package she said she was going to be giving it to her son.

She said she was glad she was able to get a ticket and have a fun-filled evening.

The turnout to this year's event was bigger than expected, said Gerry Gilbert, Chamber of Commerce Board Chair.

"We have a lot of people here," he said. "This is a wonderful event, and we're happy to see so many people here have a great time."

Next year, Gilbert said he hopes to see just as big of a turnout and hopes it will continue to help promote area businesses.

Mayor T.J. Jean and his wife, Jenn, were enjoying the lively music and community spirit that filled the deck at The Governor's Inn.

"I came to support the Chamber," he said while sporting a bright orange lei and red Hawaiian shirt. "It's a vital component to the city of Rochester."

While the food and company was a big pull for the two, Jenn said she was crossing her fingers for the cash grand prize.

Chair of the Chamber Raffle Committee Jeanne Grover said bringing together the annual raffle with a dinner event was a great idea.

"As you can see, the place is jumping," she said.

Event goers were able to win multiple secondary prizes, such as Red Sox tickets, books, restaurant gift cards and more. The Chamber is expected to raise anywhere from $12,000 to $14,000 from the event.

This year's grand prize winner was George Hanchett Jr. of Union. He was not present at the event and event organizers were not yet able to contact him Saturday night to see if he wanted to take the Harley-Davidson motorcycle or cash.

The event was underwritten by D.F. Richard, and organizers said it was the many other sponsors that also helped bring the event together.

Governor's Inn Music Series gears up for weekend

With only three weekends left of its Summer Music Series, the lineup at The Governor's Inn and Café continues to escalate, bringing in national acts that share the stage with the likes of the Stone Temple Pilots.

"Hopeless Folk" plays their happy-hour set on Thursday, Aug. 18, from 6-9 p.m. On Friday night Brian Munger takes the Spaulding Steak & Ale stage from 7-10 p.m. with a sweet acoustic act drawing from the music of Crosby, Stills and Nash; Neil Young; Dan Fogelberg; Jonathan Edwards; Simon and Garfunkel; the Beatles; America and the Eagles.

On Saturday, Aug. 20, from 7-10 p.m. at the Inn's café stage, the classic rock band Figure 8 will perform favorites from bands like Dave Matthews, Jack Johnson, John Mayer, the Red Hot Chili Peppers and the Rolling Stones. This up and coming three-piece band from Hudson promises to get a crowd motivated!

Then on Sunday, Aug. 21 from 4-7 p.m. at The Café at The Governor's Inn, its Girls Guns and Glory! Far from being 'redneck' rock n' rollers from the south, the members of this Boston roots and Americana band hail from the New England Conservatory and Berklee College of Music. They are an internationally touring band, named Independent Artist of the Year at the French Country Music Awards, two-time winner of both the Roots Act of the Year (Boston Phoenix Awards) and Americana Act of the Year (Boston Music Awards). GGG is also the only band of its genre to ever take home the top honors of Act of the Year (Boston Music Awards) and to win the legendary WBCN Rock 'n' Roll Rumble.

Having toured with the Stone Temple Pilots, Girls Guns and Glory is their own celebration of "sweet and tasty, fun lovin' and hard timin', honky tonk music that is simultaneously casual and complex." The four piece band draws upon sounds of the past including Johnny Cash, Hank Williams, The Everly Brothers, Roy Orbison, Buddy Holly, and Little Richard.

Governor's Inn plans big weekend of music

Thursday night at The Governor's Inn once again will bring the fun and good times of weekly artist Matt Gelinas and his band "Hopeless Folk," from 6-9 p.m. On Friday, Aug. 12, Paul Harkins brings his melodic and international style of acoustic blues to the stage of the front lawn in front of the Inn 's Spaulding Steak and Ale restaurant. In the case of inclement weather, those acts will be redirected under the big party tent.

On Saturday, Aug. 13, from 7-10 p.m. at the Inn's café stage, the area's popular "Nippin' the Nub" band will perform their mix of rock, blues, funk, jazz, bluegrass and country. A little bit of everything for everyone! The 'Nub' have many of their own songs but also play popular covers from bands like Robert Palmer, Tom Petty, The Rolling Stones, Little Feat and The Talking Heads.

Joyce Anderson graces the Inn's garden stage at the Café on Sunday, Aug. 14, from 4-7 p.m. Respectful of tradition but throwing genre to the wind, Joyce glides effortlessly between traditional and contemporary songs and fiddle tunes, from foot stompers to sultry torch songs. Her seven critically acclaimed CDs (Four with folk luminary Harvey Reid) and her live performance reveal her depth as an American roots musician and highlight her versatility as a singer, songwriter, interpreter and powerful instrumentalist. After a decade as a "side-gal" fiddler playing in country bands (out of Nashville) as well as swing, bluegrass and Celtic groups and playing a dizzying number of studio sessions, Joyce Andersen moved swiftly to center stage as a solo artist. Her recordings shine the spotlight on her guitar, her sophisticated songwriting, her haunting and unique voice, and her powerful fiddling. Bluegrass at the Governor's Inn

ROCHESTER — Returning for an eight-year anniversary performance, Cecil Abels of The New England Bluegrass Band will play at The Governor's Inn and The Café twice this weekend — Friday and Sunday — as part of the Inn's Summer Music Series. Abels will play his acoustic solo set on Friday, July 29, from 7-10 p.m. on the front lawn of the Inn's restaurant and then with his full bluegrass band on Sunday, July 31, from 4-7 p.m. from the gardens of The Café.

The New England Bluegrass Band is recognized as one of the most talented bluegrass groups performing in the New England region today. Led by the band's founder Cecil — aka "Mr. Sippy" — Abels, the band has become renowned among audiences across the U.S. and Europe. Bluegrass Unlimited referred to the New England Bluegrass Band CD as the "Best in Bluegrass." Abels started the band almost 20 years ago with stellar musicians, Gary Filgate, Pete Soukas, Lincoln Meyers and Roger Williams. Since the beginning, the band has become known as the best in New England. Touring Europe in 2005, the band has become a training ground for some of the U. S. finest bluegrass musicians, including graduates of the prestigious Berklee College of Music, as well as some of New England's best touring musicians. ‘Girl Howdy’ brings classic Honky Tonk and retro swing to Governor’s Inn

ROCHESTER – Playing music from the honky-tonk era spanning the late 1940’s to the early 1960’s, the five piece band Girl Howdy coming to The Governor’s Inn this Sunday, July 24 plays songs from such legends as Hank Williams, Kitty Wells, Loretta Lynn, Ray Prices, the Davis Sisters and Buck Owens. Hogwild for raw, retro twang, this band plows through their music with energy, enthusiasm, and utter devotion.

With Girl Howdy, girls rule … all three front men are in fact women: Betsy-Dawn Williams on banjo and fiddle, Paula Bradley on piano, and Rose Sinclair on sliding steel guitar. To keep the women on beat, Brian Rost backs on bass and Texas dancehall veteran drummer Billy Nadeau holds the rythem. With all its ‘gurl-power,’ however, the band is primarily characterized by sweet harmonies, sliding steel, and sawing fiddle to bring an infectious honky-tonk groove, country swing genuine jukebox sound. Girl Howdy has been bringing this nostalgia on tours across the country and to Europe. The beat goes on at The Governor’s Inn and Café, now in the fifth weekend of its free Summer Music Series. Thursday night will feature weekly artists Matt Gelinas and ‘Hopeless Folk,’ followed by a progression of talented music moving from acoustic, to rock, and then a bluegrass blend:

Brian Munger will play the acoustic series on the front lawn of The Governor’s Inn on Friday July 15 from 7 to 10pm. Munger draws his acoustic influence from Crosby, Stills & Nash; Neil Young; Dan Fogelberg; Jonathan Edwards; Simon & Garfunkel; the Beatles; the Eagles, America, and more!

On Saturday night, July 16, from 7 to 10pm, the Nashville recording artists “Brothers in Arms” band will play from the Café soundstage. Said to be one of the most powerful and inventive new rock bands to emerge, Brothers in Arms is a musical concoction of aggressive, melodic, guitar-driven rock & roll with soulfully intense yet tasteful vocals.

Formed in the heart and soul of the Midwest, this Dayton, Ohio band debuted their album “Dirt On My Bones” showing influences from the heavy classic sounds of Black Sabbath to the soulful grooves of Gov’t Mule and the melodic likes of Brothercane. These influences have all filtered through their original blend of musical perspective to arrive at their more recent, mature, and eclectic album “Edge of My Mind, ”

Then on Sunday afternoon, July 17, as part of The Sunday Garden Concerts at the Cafe from 4 to 7pm, the music becomes a blissful blend of bluegrass with Rockspring, a high energy five-piece string band that has quickly gained a strong following in the New England region. Combining original songwriting with eclectic cover songs, Rockspring puts on an incredibly entertaining live show that makes people dance out of their shoes! Blending bluegrass, rock and various other influences, Rockspring not only appeals to bluegrass fans, but also to pop, rock, alternative folk and country fans. It is their unique style that has enabled them to develop a large fan base in New England.

Rockspring has been compared to string band heavyweights Old Crowe Medicine Show and Yonder Mountain String Band. The band is comprised of Chad Verbeck on guitar and vocals, Mark Aleo on mandolin and vocals, Kyle Tuttle on banjo, Jon Aanestad on fiddle and vocals, and Rob Wright on upright Bass and vocals. Over the past year Rockspring finished a debut EP, "Rockspring", and they are currently working on new material for another full length release. Known as one of the finest singer / songwriters on the Seacoast, Dan Walker sings and plays his own songs from the heart. Fans of familiar artists Jack Johnson and Dave Matthews will find musical kinship with Walker and his style. The second weekend of The Summer Music Series from the garden stages of The Governor's Inn brings a lively combination of acoustic, alternative jam, and a big name roots and rock band, The Adam Ezra Group. All shows are free, with varying times as stated below.

On Thursday, June 23, Matt Gelinas and his band 'Hopeless Folk' will stage their weekly big beat favorites gig in front of the Spaulding Steak & Ale Restaurant from 6-9 p.m. On Friday, June 24, Ken Veno performs his happy hour style of music from 7-10 p.m., also on the front lawn, or in the case of inclement weather, on the courtyard under the Inn's big tent. All events are rain or shine.

On Saturday night, June 25, 'Vessel,' an up and coming alternative jam band, will kick it up from the garden stage of The Cafe at the Governor's Inn from 7-10 p.m., with a full menu available from Spaulding Steak & Ale.

Then on Sunday, June 26, the Adam Ezra Group will showcase their new styled acoustic rock that has taken Boston by storm and then moved on to the national level. Known for his muscular, Bruce Springsteen style of voice, Adam Ezra was dubbed by VH1 to be "one of the most promising songwriters to come along in years... with the craftsmanship and insight to become a major voice in American music." Ezra has in fact been said to be the confluence of Bruce Springsteen, Dave Matthews, James Taylor, and Jack Johnson. And his energy combines all four. Ezra's songs often revolve around the common thread of finding the courage to follow one's own unique path through life. This theme is brought to the forefront with his songs "Miss Hallelujah" and "Takin' Off Today," the latter describing a young couple bravely breaking ties with the small town they grew up in. Adam then admits to pushing his own boundaries of perspective with "Soldier," a song from the point of view of an American serving in the Middle East.

ROCHESTER — The Summer Music Series at The Governor's Inn and Café begins this weekend! The action begins Thursday, June 16th with the Matt Gelinas and Hopeless Folk performing their popular sing a long act out on the front lawn in front of the Spaulding Steak and Ale restaurant at The Governor's Inn from 6 to 9pm. On Friday, Paul Harkins and his accoustic duo will play from the stage stage. In the event of adverse weather, those performance will take place under the courtyard tend behind the restaurant.

On Saturday, June 18th the popular local rock and funk band Seconds to September will perform from the soundstage at The Cafe at The Governor's Inn, where bands will perform every Saturday from 7 to 10pm and Sunday afternoons from 4 to 7pm. This first Sunday act will feature Wooden Eye, a collaboration of veteran musicians from the New England area who put their all into playing blues, beautiful traditional ballads, and crash-and-burn roots rock. This band is pure "Americana." ROCHESTER — Three months and nearly 40 performances of free, live music are planned for the Summer Music Series at The Governor's Inn. Now in its eighth year, the series has expanded to run four evenings a week, Thursday through Sunday. A mix of acoustic, americana, folk, blues, bluegrass, and roots is scheduled, some bands local but others coming from across New England.

The series begins on Thursday, June 16 on the front lawn of The Governor's Inn, in front of the Spaulding Steak & Ale restaurant deck. Thursday and Friday evenings will feature acoustic acts at what is billed as Rochester's only streetside garden venue. In the event of rain, the musicians will perform under the tent in the courtyard behind the restaurant.

Saturday and Sundays will bring bigger bands of a wider musical range — many with percussion, horns, or other instruments— performing from the soundstage in the garden behind The Café at the Governor's Inn. There guests may be served at the garden tables or bring their own lawn blankets or chairs and play horseshoes, croquet or bocce ball and enjoy the expansive, lush olde-world estate.

Ringling Brothers clown to bring comedy to Governor's Inn

ROCHESTER – Live comedy returns to the Lilac City on Friday, May 20, when the The Governor's Inn brings three Boston headline comedians to its ballroom stage.Headlining the evening will be Mike Koutrobus, founder of the "Live Free or Die Laughing" comedy tour group. A performer/entertainer of many sorts, Koutrobus spent part of his 24 years in entertainment as a travelling circus clown with The Ringling Brothers … juggling, riding unicycles and performing magic tricks. Known for connecting with audiences of all sorts, young and old, Koutrobus style of comedy is gripping, personal, and in-your-face. Most recently, Koutrobus can be found ring announcing for the Global Fight League, and touring the comedy circuit throughout New England and New York.

Also on stage at The Governor's will be Dan Crohn, a recent finalist in the Boston Comedy Festival. His hilarious stories of family and friends – as well as outrageous chronicles from his daytime job of teaching fourth graders - have entertained audiences all over New England. ROCHESTER – Live comedy is back to warm up the Lilac city with lots of laughs on Friday, April 22 at The Governor’s Inn, where three Boston-area stand-up comedians will be staged.

Headlining the evening will be the legendary Bob Seibel, one of Boston’s longest running and most popular comedians. Known for his hilarious, uninhibited performances laced with quick, sustained improvisation, Seibel is well known amongst comedy clubs of the Northeast. Seibel has a reputation for taking his audience on a fast paced, non-stop tour of life as seen by an observer who spends four to seven months on the road taking in odd bits and pieces of life as well as performing his brand of humor. Among the most experienced comics in the Northeast, Seibel's tenure includes several voyages as a celebrity cruise ship performer on Carnival and Royal Caribbean.

Also on The Governor’s Inn stage will be headliner Tony Moschetto, an actor, comedian, and award winning filmmaker. On his website Moschetto says in a mock Swedish sexy accent. "I've been waiting for you. Do you find me...sexy? I hope so.” Moshetto's offbeat and quirky style of comedy is well respected amongst his peers and is considered one of the best comics in Boston. He mixes his life experiences with his philosophy and it comes out to be truly unique and original. His use of silence is astonishing. Moschetto has appeared on Comedy Central's Stand-up Stand-up as well as the Playboy Channel. He plays regularly in Boston and New York and has performed at the Laugh Factory and legendary Comedy Store in Los Angeles.

Tickets are now on sale for the Murder Mystery winter dinner show at The Governor's Inn. Now in its 15th year, the Inn is rolling out the red carpet this year for an extravagant show themed after the wildly popular "Dancing with the Stars" TV show. Always popular, murder mysteries at the Governor's are no small affair — with a cast of 12 actors who sing and dance, live music, a big stage, and various set locations, this dinner show is not only spectacular but chock full of scandal, intrigue and laughs.

At this mystery of deadly dance, three couples compete for the coveted distinction of receiving DWTS first place disco ball trophy. Things quickly go awry as a murder steals the spotlight but the dauntless cast, lead by a heroic detective, work to solve the mystery. Great music, productions, dance numbers, magnificent costumes, a wonderful dinner and a trademark house tour are all part of the evening. Complete with stellar performances, awful auditions, judge bickering, and Hollywood scandal, this show is sure to be a big hit.

The evening starts at 6:30 p.m. as guests are welcomed into the Governor's Inn ballroom and onto the elaborate 'Prancing with the Stars' set of the show by the costumed cast and directed to the hors d'oeuvres. The room is decked out with star-studded flair and red carpet splendor. Seating is in group tables of 10, set for an elegant dinner. The show begins with a grand musical number featuring this year's contestants. Soon enough a murder takes place; then the audience gets its turn at the fun, beginning with a rollicking house tour of the Inn — five "scenes" with lots of food, drink, and audience participation. Upon return to the ballroom, dinner is served followed by more song, dance, mystery, dessert, fun, and an investigation of the murder. Those clever enough to figure out "who dunnit" win a prize.

ROCHESTER — New England's most electric comic comes to The Lilac City on Friday, Nov. 19 when the The Governor's Inn brings Harrison Stebbins along with two other Boston comics to its stage.

With a sarcastic wit and an improvisational style, Stebbins has quickly become one of the most popular acts in the Northeast. His unique blend of high-energy physical comedy and clever insight keeps audiences laughing long after he has left the stage. Stebbin's good looks and youthful vigor also makes him quite popular with the ladies.

Stebbins has performed in some of the world's best comedy clubs including Caroline's Comedy Club, Nick's Comedy Stop, Gotham Comedy Club, Catch a Rising Star and, of course, Mottley's Comedy Club in Boston (his Wednesday night shows in the city have become the stuff of legend). ROCHESTER – On Saturday, Nov. 6 three of Boston ’s best comics will bring back the laughs to Lillac City’s own dinner stage at The Governor’s Inn .
Carolyn Plummer will get the evening going. God help us. Some comics rely on the monumental events of the day or the faux pas of the rich and famous. Not Carolyn. Carolyn pulls material from the hum-drum, day-to-day monotony of the life of everyman. And she does it well. To Carolyn the monumental is easy … to her it’s our very existence that is hard, to the point of being ridiculous. Some women look in the mirror and complain because they aren’t pretty enough, not rich enough, not young enough. Carolyn gives her reflection the finger. The third child of a Congregational Minister and a home maker mother, Plummer says she should be aloof but instead she is clueless!

‘C.P.’ Carolyn learned early on that she could lament or she could make fun. See her once and you’ll quickly figure out which path she chose. And you’ll laugh. Possessing an uncanny ability to introspectively pull from places most of us hide, Carolyn puts a nail through the heart of whiners, self-loathers and the self-sorry of the world and makes the average seem hilarious and larger than life. Most of all, Carolyn’s twisted perception of our common existence leaves audiences hysterically shaking heads in agreement with her assessment that the world is indeed a very funny place.

Also on stage on Saturday, Nov. 6 at The Governor’s Inn will be comedy superstar Corey Manning – the evening’s headliner - a regular host of Boston Comedy Jams, and has been a semi-finalist in the Boston Comedy Festival, and, interestingly enough, is the first comedian to be certified as an artist by the City of Boston . He has also hosted celebrity fundraisers featuring NFL and NBA players, National Recording Artists, and Actors. In 2006 Corey was featured in Jamie Foxx’s ‘LAFFAPALOOZA! … The New Faces of Comedy’. More recently, he's been a contestant in the Bay Area Black Comedy Competition and Festival, and had a very successful début of his one-man play ‘Confessions of a Blackman.’

ROCHESTER — Jay Bent from WBAY showed up at the doorstep of The Governor's Inn recently with a plaque in hand.

"Congratulations" he told the staff. "We wanted you to have a little token of appreciation for your extraordinary efforts in community spirit."

The plaque, now displayed by the Inn's front desk, reads "Presented to The Governor's Inn, with our sincere appreciation for your support of NH's and Maine's largest canned food drive."

The radio's donation campaign, called "Caring and Sharing," was to benefit local food pantries and shelters such as My Friend's Place and Crossroads House. The event raised approximately 100,000 cans of food and $10,000 in cash which bought good gift certificates at supermarkets.

The Governor's Inn came in the top ranking among businesses whose employees individually drove to a Dover location to drop off cans and cash. In the final days of the campaign, the BAY radio was announcing with great frequency who the top vying contenders were — and they were very close — in the business category. In the end, The Governors' Inn came in with nearly 2,000 cans donated.

Among the Inn's top employee donors were those who work in the restaurant handling food... three of the chefs and several wait staff.

"You can affect the community in such a big way by doing such little things," said Chelsea Coul, waitress and front desk attendant at the Inn. "We all need to contribute more... even in little ways," she added with a smile. "It's just good Karma... and we all need good Karma."

ROCHESTER — Heading into its second-to-last weekend of concerts, and what looks to be a nice warm one again — The Summer Music Series at The Governor's Inn brings two high-energy bands to its Café garden stage — classic rock on Saturday night and bluegrass on Sunday afternoon.

On Saturday, Sept. 18, from 7 to 9 p.m. Six Feet Over, a popular area band including three local teachers, is influenced by the music of Ben Harper, Jack Johnson, Sublime, and The Grateful Dead. They started as a cover band but now have many originals including Dance Tonight, Take Me Home, Your Song, Beautiful Distraction, Sister Blue, and Revelation. Six Feet Over is comprised of Jason Talon on lead vocals and rhythm guitar, Adam Black on lead guitar, Lex Buzzell on bass and backup vocals and Scott Cronshaw on percussion.

ROCHESTER - Now in the final three weeks of it’s Summer Music Series, The Governor’s Inn and Café present three bands over the weekend, including the lauded Boston roots band Hey Mama.

On Friday, Sept. 10 from 4-7pm Bob Cangello brings his fun, good time party favorites up front of the Inn, for the Acoustic Fridays on the Front Lawn series.

On Saturday, Sept. 11 from 7 to 10pm Nippin’ the Bud’ will play their experimental, progressive rock as part of the Rockin’ Saturdays at the Café series.

Then on Sunday, Sept. 12 from 4 to 7pm, Hey Mama will cut loose with their fabulous act for the Inn’s Sunday Garden Concert. In the midst of a huge summer tour of the Northeast – starting and ending in New York City – this raucous roots and Americana party band has been promoting their latest new album. Formerly known just by their first names – Avi and Cecilia – the amazing duo has put together a formidable band with undercurrents of blues and roots-country music.

Launching off the band’s fiery synergy is Celia Woodsmith’s explosively emotive voice, powerful but at times peacefully tender, along with her raucous washboard. Her partner Avi Salloway plays and amazing sliding steel guitar, and their resounding voices bond together to deliver a gritty, catchy, original sound. Avi and Celia have teamed up with heavy hitting drums and bass to deliver a dynamic and powerful performance to their band Hey Mama. Their new album – by the same name - resembles an art collection, providing a many-textured look at contemporary experiences, political and personal. Avi and Celia’s previous records: Let it Rise and Off the Floor, where both smash hits.

Hey Mama has been consistently touring the Eastern United States, building a loyal fan base over the last several years. They have performed at legendary venues and festivals such as the Iron Horse Music Hall, Club Passim, Higher Ground Ballroom, The Paradise, Champlain Valley Folk Festival, and the Discover Jazz Festival. Their fearless performances have also landed them high profile concerts supporting renowned artists such as Taj Mahal, Leon Russell, and Big Brother & The Holding Company.

George Brown has produced two albums At Sea Level (2005) and Local Music (2007) and is currently working on his third album Light of the Sun. George’s influences include Bob Dylan, Van Morrison, The Beatles, The Dead, Eric Clapton, Ray Lamontagne, Joni Mitchell, Ryan Adams, PHISH, Bryan Litchfield, Al Green, Peter Prince, and Cat Stevens.

His band recently collaborated on "The Hat"- a musical play - with strong reggae and folk influences. The George Brown Band is comprised of Lex Buzzell on Bass, George on Guitar, Bryan Litchfield on Drums, and Nate Herrick on Keyboards. And everyone on vocals!

Sun., Aug. 29 4-7pm Sweet Wednesday String Band – Acoustic Roots

Sweet Wednesday will perform from 4-7pm, rain or shine, with a casual menu and BBQ available, and donations for the band encouraged. Sundays are family friendly for a classic Sunday garden party to end the weekend.

Sweet Wednesday String Band features Jackie Damsky on fiddle, Michael Sullivan on mandolin, and Yani Battteau on the banjo, with singer-songwriters Dave Falk and Lisa Housman who travel the country with the sweetest vocals, guitar, and harmonica.

Lisa and Dave have won numerous songwriting awards, including First Place in the Great American Song Contest, First Place in the Dallas Songwriting Competition, and Runner-Up in the John Lennon Song Contest. Characters that make their appearances in their songs include a grandmother with a secret crush on James Bond, a traveling dog, and some rats named Grumpy, Sleepy, and Sister Heartache. Their fun, engaging show has played to crowds of all ages at venues ranging from coffeehouses at folksy haunts like Club Passim in Cambridge to raucous bars, intellectual college campuses, and the wedding of a couple whose first date was a Dave & Lisa show.

To make their debut album ‘Wherever You Go,’ Dave and Lisa teamed up with producer Rob Ignazio and several of Boston’s finest musicians, including Swinging Steaks members Andy Plaisted, Paul Kochanski, Jamie Walker, Steve Sadler and Jim Gambino. The Swinging Steaks are local legends who have toured with the Band and the Black Crowes and appeared on Mountain Stage and Late Night with Conan O’Brien. Other contributors include Steve Mayone lending lap steel, mandolin, and lead guitar licks, and Seth Connelly.

ROCHESTER — Donatello, Dekoto and Truffle — that sounds like a law firm, but it's not. They are actually the names of the three musical lineups this weekend at The Governor's Inn. Now in its eighth weekend of its Summer Music Series, The Inn and its Cafe stage three acts every weekend through the end of September: Acoustic Fridays on the Front Lawn, Rockin' Saturdays at the Cafe, and The Sunday Garden Concerts at the Cafe.

Friday, Aug. 13 from 6 to 9 p.m., George Donatello, a locally known financial adviser, rips the chords musically when not otherwise immersed numerically. Master of the acoustic, Donatello plays a popular mix from the Beatles to Bon Jovi. Saturday, Aug. 14, from 7 to 10 p.m. is the Dekoto Band; Singer/Songwriter Gerry Dekoto performs an eclectic scope of material ranging from southern rock-a-billy and story-telling to stone cold Memphis blues. Reaching across genres, Gerry plays everything from 'revamped' rock and heavy metal classics to emotional renditions of silly sitcom soundtracks. A common set list includes both covers (Duffy, Prince, Seal, Aerosmith, Ethridge, Monkees, etc.) and original compositions, as well as standards from Dylan, Seger, Clapton, The Beatles and Stones. Love songs, political commentary, biting parody are themes often visited in Gerry's own material. Gerry is currently working on his second CD titled 'Heavy Metal Love Songs for the Acoustic Heart.' Sunday, Aug. 15 from 4 to 7 p.m. Truffle: Not many bands have the staying power of Truffle, the ever-popular groovin', rootsy band now in its 25th year which may be more familiar to music fans than any other band in the area. Acoustic Truffle is the trio featuring three of the four original band member of Savoy Truffle, which toured the country since 1986. The trio includes bassist David Bailey, Ned Chase on multiple strings and Dave Gerard singing and playing guitar. Rochester – The third weekend of The Summer Music Series from the garden stages of The Governor’s Inn brings a vivid combination of Blues, Country, Rock, and Bluegrass . All shows are outdoors, free, with varying times as stated below.

‘Acoustic Fridays on the Front Lawn’ kicks off Friday July 9 from 6-10pm with “Poor Howard” Stith classic twelve-string blues accompanied by the King of harmonica, Mike “Bullfrog” Rogers. This dynamic blues duo showcases heartfelt vocals, dazzling guitar and harmonica coupled with Howard’s endless anecdotes, puns and shaggy-dog stories. Scott Alarik, folk music writer for the Boston Globe said "Poor Howard's 12-string guitar has the solid propulsive groove of a stead-moving freight train; and he has an uncanny way of singing classic blues tunes as if their hard luck stories were happening today.”

On Saturday night, July 10, it’s the “Nickless Band” featuring Rochester ’s notorious Art Nickless along with his daughter Brianne and brother Jeff Nickless kickin’ out country music and rock as part at the Café at The Governor’s Inn ’s Rockin’ Saturday series. Then on Sunday, July 11, it’s everyone’s favorite bluegrass, The New England Bluegrass Band (NEBB), featuring Cecil Abels and his entourage of fabulous players from New England . The NEBB will perform from 4-7pm, rain or shine, with a casual menu and BBQ available, and donations for the band encouraged. Presentense, and acoustic duo featuring Paul on guitar, harmonica and vocals and Jennie on lead vocals, keyboard, mandolin and djembe. Their sound combines influences of jazz, gypsy jazz, blues, french music and even operatic training. Inspired by local artists and musician friends from around the world, their sound is filled with unique vocal harmonies and diverse songwriting.

The George Brown Band, an orginal jam band playing Americana, roots, and American funk. Reviewed as having “Such a cool vocal delivery, great feel, and really solid lyrics.” Members include drummer Brian Litchfield, bassist Lex Buzzell, singer and guitarist George Brown.

Sunday, June 27 4-7pm

Wooden Eye: A collaboration of veteran musicians from the New England area who put their all into playing blues, beautiful traditional ballads, and crash-and-burn roots rock. This band is pure ‘Americana.’ Wooden Eye is comprised of Bob Halperin on guitar, Diddley Bo on Mandolin and Vocals, Mike “Bullfrog” Rogers - formerly of Roundhouse Blues - on harmonica and vocals, Joe Rogers Drums and Percussion, and Dan MacLellan on bass and vocals.

Acoustic Fridays on the Front Lawn

A new series to the Inn, scheduled on the front lawn in front of the Inn’s new Spaulding Steak & Ale restaurant. Solo, duo, and trios of top-notch acoustic musicians will perform Friday evenings from 7 to 10 pm where guests may choose to sit at garden tables or on the new deck.

Rockin' Saturdays at The Cafe

Classic Rock that’s sure to please the crowd. These Saturday night concerts feature local area bands perform from the garden stage at The Cafe. These surprisingly talented performers make for a lively Saturday night crowd. 7 to 10pm.

The Sunday Garden Concerts

Blues, Bluegrass, Folk, and Americana - This music series has become a popular tradition among music lovers to end the weekend on a Sunday afternoon in an idyllic garden setting. The impressive lineup of regional touring bands brings talent recognized nationally who have performed at Carnegie Hall, The Kennedy Center, National Public Radio’s “Mountain Stage,” the famed Philadelphia Folk Festival and other widely acclaimed venues across the country.

The Sunday concerts are family affairs in an idyllic garden setting where people can choose to sit in the enclosed serving area with tables, or bring their own lawn blankets or chairs and enjoy the concert up close. Families are welcome as the expansive gardens allow families with children to roam about, swing on seats from the huge oaks, play horseshoes or Bocce Ball. Sundays from 4 to 7pm.
